The Korean War was seen by Britain as the first real test of the UN and agreed with the US that any reluctance to get involved would show weakness and lead to further communist aggression elsewhere.  Britain also needed to gain US support for the Cold War in the far east, as well as protection for Europe.  The North Koreans had moved into the south on 25th June 1950 and the Commandos were the first British forces to be involved, followed by the army in August. Along with the US, these UN forces were initially pushed back until a counter-offensive in September 1950 forced the North Koreans to retreat. This push continued up to the border with China, but in October 1950, Chinese forces entered the conflict and pushed the United Nations forces back to the south. After another two years of fighting, an armistice was eventually signed on July 27th 1953.
