Plains War
A series of conflicts between the United States and Native American Indian tribes took place in the Great Plains area of the United States from 1850-1880. Some of the Native American tribes involved in the conflicts included the Sioux, Lakota, Cheyenne, Comanche, Kiowa, Apache, and Arapaho. The most well-known battle of this period was the Battle of Little Bighorn (1876), in which General Custer and some of the 7th Cavalry Regiment were defeated by Crazy Horse and Sitting Bulls combined armies. This period is often popularised in stories and movies of lone US cavalry patrols or outposts making "last stands" against hordes of Indians.
