Republican
At the start of the war the Republic had no army. In the beginning were the militias, raised throughout Spain in response to the rising in July 1936, and to which the foreign volunteers were drawn initially. Their equipment and training was deficient, and their ideologies at odds, but it was these troops that prevented the Nationalists achieving an early victory. The loyal units of the Metropolitan army were of limited military value. Most of the junior officer corps had defected to the rebels so, in addition to poor training and lack of equipment, they were also largely leaderless. The only effective bodies of trained personnel available to the Republic at the outbreak of war were the loyal elements of the Guardia de Asalto, and the Cuerpo de Carabineros. From October 1936 all these disparate elements formed the Ejército Popular de la República, hereinafter the Popular Army.
