At the outbreak of war the Metropolitan army had 15 French FT17 and six Schneider F18 tanks in service, divided between two regiments. 1o Regimiento Ligero de Caros de Combate was based in Madrid, 2o Regimiento at Zaragoza. The Republic retained nine FT17 and the six Schneiders all of which saw service in and around Madrid in 1936. A further 32 FT17 were bought from Poland in November 1936. Nationalists do not seem to have used their FT17 other than for training. The Soviets supplied the Republic with approximately 300 T-26 and 50 BT-5 tanks. Crewed by Russian initially, by the end of 1937 the crews were entirely Spanish. The Germans, in contrast, supplied 122 PzKpfw I to the Nationalists, the Italians deployed 155 L3/33 and 35. Both these were so inferior to the Soviet types such that captured T-26 and BT-5 were incorporated into Nationalist units. The story of tanks in Spain is a lacklustre one and they were never used in the decisive way that they were during WW2. On the other hand, the humble truck was instrumental in facilitating a Nationalist victory. The Neutrality Act notwithstanding, the supply of American trucks, fuel and credit, gave the National Army a level of operational mobility that the Popular Army couldnt rival. At least 12,000 American trucks were supplied to the Nationalists, compared with less than 1500 by the Soviets to the Republic. Here is a small selection of vehicles which we'll be adding to over the coming years. Republican = (R) / Nationalist = (N)
